Can you wear contact lenses in a sauna?

The simplest way to protect comfort and hygiene before stepping into a hot recovery room.

A traditional sauna’s hot, dry air can make contact lenses and eyes feel dry or irritated. Water exposure creates a separate concern because contacts can trap microorganisms against the eye.

The cleanest approach is to remove lenses with washed, fully dried hands before entering, then use glasses outside the hot room if needed.

Dry heat

Comfort can change quickly.

Contacts depend on a healthy tear film. Heat, reduced blinking and an already dry eye may lead to burning, blurred vision or a lens that feels difficult to remove. The lens does not melt in normal sauna heat, but discomfort is reason enough not to wear it.

Water exposure

Contacts and water do not mix.

Eye-care guidance advises removing lenses before showering, swimming or using a hot tub. The same rule matters around a cold plunge: do not submerge or splash your eyes while wearing contacts, and never rinse lenses or a lens case with tap water.

A simple routine

Prepare before the session.

01

Wash

Wash your hands before touching your eyes or lenses.

02

Dry

Dry hands completely with a clean, lint-free towel.

03

Remove

Store reusable lenses in fresh disinfecting solution or discard daily lenses.

04

Reinsert later

Wait until you have cooled down and your hands are clean and dry.

Eye-care guidance

Prioritize lens hygiene.

Direct sauna-specific research is limited, but established contact-lens guidance is clear about avoiding water exposure and responding promptly to pain, redness or vision changes.

After the session

Do not ignore eye pain.

If a lens feels stuck, do not force it off a dry eye. Follow your eye-care professional’s instructions for appropriate lubricating drops. Remove the lens and seek prompt care for persistent pain, redness, light sensitivity, discharge or vision changes.

Traditional sauna

A little preparation makes the session easier.
