Unveiling the Power of Red Light Therapy: A Deep Dive into its Benefits and Applications

Red Light Therapy has become a trending topic and for good reason, this therapeutic treatment has a whole host of benefits for the skin, hair and body in general. This blog post is a deep-dive into what Red Light Therapy is, what the benefits are and how to get the most out of the treatment.

Purple Yoga offers 10-minute, full-body red light therapy sessions using panels equipped with seven different wavelengths of light (480nm-1060nm). During each session, all seven wavelengths are utilized.

Our multi-wave, R+ NIR+ Spectrum ensures deeper penetration of red and near-infrared light for optimal results. We have four state of the art, Platinum LED BioMax 900 panels.

While red light therapy (RLT) generally uses wavelengths in the range of 600-900 nanometers (nm), specific benefits are often associated with narrower ranges within this spectrum. However, it’s important to note that research is ongoing, and there isn’t always a universally agreed-upon “best” wavelength for every condition. Often, a combination of wavelengths is used for synergistic effects, which is what our treatments at Purple Yoga offer.

Red Light Therapy Benefits for Skin Health

Red Light Therapy is extremely beneficial for the largest organ in the body: the skin! Below are the recommended wavelengths for particular skin conditions or concerns.

Red Light Therapy recommendations for Skin Conditions:

  • Collagen Production and Anti-Aging: 630-670 nm and 800-880 nm wavelengths are believed to penetrate the skin effectively and stimulate collagen production.
  • Acne and Skin Inflammation: 660 nm and potentially blue light (400-470 nm) in combination. Red light reduces inflammation, while blue light targets acne-causing bacteria.
  • Wound Healing and Scar Reduction: 660 nm and 800-880 nm. These wavelengths promote cellular repair and reduce inflammation, aiding in wound healing.
  • Enhanced Recovery: Red Light Therapy has demonstrated effectiveness in speeding up wound healing by stimulating tissue repair and reducing inflammation. Studies from the Journal of Biophotonics and Advances in Skin and Wound Care suggest that RLT can activate growth factors crucial for tissue regeneration.
  • Hair Growth Stimulation: 630-670 nm. This range may increase blood flow to hair follicles and stimulate cellular activity.
  • Androgenic Alopecia: Clinical trials reviewed by Health.com show that red light therapy can improve hair density and thickness in people with androgenic alopecia, with one study noting a 51% increase in hair count.

Red Light Therapy for Pain Relief and Inflammation Reduction

Red Light Therapy is anti-inflammatory, so this is a great treatment option for anyone that has been struggling with pain and/or inflammation.

Here are the best red light therapy wavelengths for pain and inflammation reduction:

  • Chronic Pain and Arthritis: 800-880 nm. Near-infrared light penetrates deeper into tissues, targeting muscles and joints for pain relief and inflammation reduction. There’s evidence from a 2022 review in the Journal of Pain that red light therapy can alleviate pain associated with conditions like fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and neuropathy by acting on pain-transmitting neurons.
  • Muscle Recovery and Performance: 800-880 nm range aids in muscle repair and reduces inflammation after exercise.
  • Sports Injuries: The therapy might enhance muscle recovery post-exercise or injury, with research from the Journal of Life suggesting its use in both rehabilitation and performance enhancement.
  • Joint Disorders: According to a 2012 report in Annals of Biomedical Engineering, red light therapy can help lower inflammation, edema, and symptoms of chronic joint disorders.
  • Anti-inflammatory Effects: Red Light Therapy’s broad anti-inflammatory effects can benefit overall health, reducing pain and aiding in recovery from various conditions.

Red Light Therapy for Mental and Emotional Well-being

Red light therapy isn’t just for your body—it’s helpful for your mood and sleep too!

  • Mood Enhancement and Stress Reduction: While specific wavelengths are still being researched, the general red and near-infrared range (600-900 nm) is thought to have positive effects on mood and stress levels.
  • Sleep Improvement: The same general range (600-900 nm) may help regulate circadian rhythms and improve sleep quality.

Red Light Therapy for Eye Health

Although still emerging, some studies have linked red light therapy to benefits for eye health, particularly in older adults, by improving the function of retinal cells.

Safety and Side Effects of Red Light Therapy

According to recent publications, red light therapy is considered safe with no significant adverse effects when used as directed. However, the long-term safety of home-use devices is still under investigation.

It’s crucial to remember:

  • The effectiveness of red light therapy can also depend on factors like the device’s power output, treatment duration, and individual skin characteristics.
  • Our Platinum LED panels emit the highest amount of irradiance output than any other LED therapy light available. This means faster, better results through deeper penetration and increased power and are FDA class II medical devices.
